- ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. The ISBN looks like a barcode, and it’s a tracking number used worldwide, much the same as barcodes used for grocery items or any other product.
- Each published literary “work” has its own unique ISBN, for example if you publish a 6×9″ book it needs one ISBN — if you also publish a Kindle, it needs a different one — publish a 5×8 book in English & French, you need two more.
- If a book is updated or changed in any way, even changing the cover, a new ISBN needs to be issued each time. The reason for this is that each “version” of a book is unique and each one can only be tracked by the unique ISBN.
- If a book is published in different sizes for formats (for example printed and Kindle), think of it as families who have identical twins, triplets and quadruplet children. They are in the same family, they are related, but each is unique :-)
- If literary works (books) are translated into foreign languages, new ISBNs need to be issued for each type of each version (6×9″, 5×8″, Kindle etc).
